RE: What to buy based on this set of needs?

You have a lot of good advice/choices above....We bought used. My strong advice would be to drive and look at a lot of them before you decide. We found a good deal on a Newmar - our second one but we did not have the budget you have. I also think you can find a great coach for less than you have in the budget and it will cost less in the long run. You can find some very nice used upper end coaches for about 150K - 200K nowadays.
Spend the time to drive a lot and look a lot

RE: need help on used class A

Only you by yourself can make a decision about slides. People on here can't really advise whether YOU will be OK with it or not -- you have to be the one to decide that. We would not have a coach without them - but that's us.....If you travel with just the two of you and no kids or large pets - you will probably be comfortable enough. Just get it at a very good price because if you ever want to or have to sell or trade it....well - just get it cheap.
Next -- we looked at used Beavers - make sure to weigh the coach and check the CCC ---It will probably list NCC not CCC...make sure to figure the CCC...We looked at one coach that listed only NCC - and when you figured out the CCC it was only a little above 400 lbs. All this said - I would definitely prefer an older diesel than a newer gasser and I like older Beavers - the woodwork they used to do for them is some of the best you can find.

RE: Flying J changes credit price on Diesel Fuel at truck pumps

I ordered a Flying J Mastercard ---- I get the cash price at the pump and save probably average 10 cents a gallon on what is usually the best price around even before the discount --- I use their money for a month --- pay it off when billed >>> No fee, free card, no interest, cash price on diesel, my money is still in the bank drawing interest and I use their money for a month......What's not to like???
Also, I have NEVER gotten bad fuel from Flying J. I have read so many comments about fuel that is stale at some stations or diesel fuel that has water in it.....I don't need that problem. The Flying J fuel turns over so much that I figure it is always good stuff.

RE: Michlin XZA2 Energy Tires

I just replaced the tires on my 2003 DSDP. I replaced them with XZA3 Michelins -- 275/80R/22.5 -- Load Range H.
I looked a lot and studied and called Spartan and Michelin and talked to several Dutch Star owners before I bought them. I am very happy with them. I had XZA1 275/70R/22.5 tires on the coach before replacing them and the new XZA3 tires ride and handle much better. They take a lower pressure than the XZA1 for the same weight. They are also "supposed" to be designed for "ultra fuel efficiency" :)and they are directional...I doubt I will ever tell the fuel difference....but the ride and tire noise and handling are definitely improved.

RE: Memphis East Campground

I would avoid Memphis 5 PM traffic at all cost. If i was before 5 PM I would stop on the east side and stay at Memphis East - it will be OK for just an overnight and if I was hitting Memphis at 5 - I would stop in Mississippi or Tom Sawyer depemding if I was on 55 or 40. If it was for more than just a quick sleep stop - I would go to the Agricenter.

RE: Anyone have a Pressure Pro alert due to mis-read of sensor?

Except for the software upgrade I had to do when it was new - our Pressure Pro has worked great. A couple of times I thought I had a problem but it was user error on my part. We do have the repeater and I think it helps.

RE: Which load range would you buy? F or G

I would go with the G -- Likely it will handle the same weight at a lower pressure according to the charts and that would probably make the ride better -- also I would go for the extra rating.
Weigh the coach on a scale and use the charts not the max on the sidewall---

RE: difference between Dutch Star and Ventana

What is the difference in the Ventana chassis listed as a NVS chassis and the DSDP is listed as Mountain Master GT? Do both have IFS - the DS specs specifically lists a chassis with IFS and I don't see it listed in the Ventana. I would expect there are chassis differences as part of the price difference along with the engine.

RE: Cummins engines ULSD fuel and fuel pumps.

Cummins recommends not to use additives. I even had a phone conversation with factory service recently and again they recommended not to use any additive.
I probably need to knock on wood BUT I have a 2003 ISC 350 and have had no problem. I drive it some and it sits some....I have used some Howes and sometimes not...I see a lot of people -- many many MORE who have not had a problem with a lift pump leak. BUT I do understand that the new pumps have a different O-rings or gaskets. So that begs the question ---if there is no problem then why do the new pumps have a new gasket material....hmmmmm.
I think you will find a whole lot more folks with the engines without a problem. The Cummins techs are not seeing many as per a conversation lately. Anyway - if it happens, it is pretty cheap to change. I have thought about buying one just to have it on board in case.

There is a 91 Foretravel at PPL with 100K miles for about the same price that I would look at instead.

RE: Wiring a Toad the cheap way

I use magnetic lights on the roof only wired to the MH. I am on my fourth tow car and still have the same lights. I also have Brake Buddy which lights us the toad lights - when it engages. If I have to make a quick stop it is something to see - this thing lights up like a Christmas tree - the MH lights come on, the toad brake lights come on and the magnetic lights come on.

RE: 22.5 vs. 19.5

Called Spartan today to find out what size tires and alum. wheels they are putting on the new coaches today.
much to my suprise he said 295x19.5.
My question is can I put this size on my coach , I currently have 275x70x22.5 on 7.5" steel rims.
I would call back and reaffirm their answer. When I talked to them the other day for replacements for my DSDP - They recommended 275-80R-22.5. I don't think they would recommend to replace your 22.5s with 19,5s???? I would call them back and get somebody in the service dept.

RE: Freightliner vs. Spartan Chasis

Wanted a side radiator and I believe FL did not have it at that time -- don't know about what you are looking at.. also wanted IFS and FL did not have it either. We have a Spartan and have been happy with it. It was a more expensive chassis than FL though. Side radiator was important to me.
One more thing - Spartan and FL both make a lot of units for more than just the RV industry. No matter what happens with the RV industry and RV manufacturers -- I believe there will always be a Spartan Chassis Plant and a FL Plant and service centers and parts availability....Not as sure about the others what with the economy and fuel and RV market and all.....

RE: brake buddy

I have one and believe in using Brake Buddy. It has come in handy a few times. I did not trust the remote light "alert" telling if it energized so I use a hardwire to a small 12 volt light in the dash to tell if it brakes....It does not activate anytime except when I need it as it has adjustments so you can find what you like for what you tow. Like the other guy said - I don't leave home without it....and not getting into different states laws -- but I think some states require it.....I never really researched it much though because I always have it on anyway.

RE: Russellville AR to Hot Springs Village on Hwy7

I have done it in a 40 footer without the tow car. The rig will make it fine. Yes, it is curvy in a few places and sometimes a little steep. The drive is very pretty. One caution is that there are a couple of small bridges that are not much more than the MH per lane. Slow down and look ahead as you approach the bridges and make sure there is no other traffic and move a little toward the center. Also, I have done Hwy 9 route and it is better road but I think somewhat longer. I would take 7 and watch the bridges.

RE: Is 2070 ccc enough?

Personally, I would keep looking. I think 2000 is VERY minimal for long extended trips. I don't want to have to get a calculator and figure how much water I can carry or how much fuel I can carry and be below max weight. For week or weekend trips it would be fine, but if you want to take trips of 2 or 3 months and even consider living in the coach for extended periods...I would pass. There are too many good deals out there right now on coaches that might fit your needs better to spend the kind of money you are spending on a maybe once in a lifetime purchase and not get it exactly right.

RE: Maintenance on 330 ISC

Roy,
A suggestion on changing the fuel filters is to replace one at a time and restart the engine before replacing the second. Another post said that the lift pump, key on for 30 seconds, will refill the filters. It will sometimes take maybe 3 or 4 cycles to fill the filter. That's why changing on at a time helps the process.
This will fuel filter method works.
You have a 2002 with probably a 2001 engine -- I would also recommend changing the big intake air filter if you can't find where it has recently been done. That little gauge does not necessarily mean the filter is OK. You can get the true Cummins parts at rvchassisparts.com at a good price. Even if the serpentine belt looks OK - I would order a spare (they are hard to find in an emergency) and also order some extra fuel filters for your stock.
